Backup Exec 2010 R2 + MSL2024

Hi ,

We just implemented a new installation of Backup Exec 2010 R2 on Windows Server 2008 R2 on HP G6 server. Also installed is a tape library MSL2024 connected to server. In the OS - device manager ,both the tape drive and medium changer is shown without any errors. BE 2010 picks up the device and the media tapes - but having difficulty in doing a quick erase on the tape or renaming of the tape.

The media tapes are placed in slots 1-6. Inventory can be done and thats about it. When trying to do a backup error message appears: :" The medium is not compatible with the device pool". Any help will be appreciated.

  • Installed the latest driver, but strange that I had to reboot the servers almost 3 times before the device manager picked it up. That sorted out everything and it now picks up the tapes.

  • Hi,

    Can BE see MSL2024?

    Is you BE instalation, udated wiht last SP, and patchs?

    Symantec BE tape drives are loaded?, if not run "tapeinst.exe"

    Check, of RSM is stopped and disabled.

    Verify if the tapes you are using are compatible with tape drive.

    Run an Inventory, and try a backup.

    Any way, check if scsi terminator have a light.

  • ...I would strongly suggest you read what gets posted before posting for the sake of doing so!!!

    * RSM doesn't exist in Win2K8...

    * Inventory works; backups don't!

  • Hi there,

    Is there a specific BE error message shown in the Alerts tab/Job log that runs, or is that it?

    Make sure that your library isn't connected to a RAID card...it needs to be connected to its own SCSI card.

    Also, what happens if you try using the built-in Windows backup software? Does it give you the same error?

  • Did you install the tape library in BE using the Device Configuration Wizard (Tools --> Wizards -->)?

    Under the Windows Device Manager, check that the tape library is listed as an Unknown Medium Changer with a Microsoft driver and the tape drive is listed under its own name and with a Symantec driver.
