Seems you're looking for documentation on Disaster Recovery (DR)?

Here's a collection of technotes on DR - http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH83015. I know this may not be a 100% of what you're looking for, but will help you recover a server (or media server) up from scratch.

In addition to this, you can also refer to the Administrator's Guide for more instructions on other basic tasks which need to be performed during a DR like: Creating Backup-to-Disk folders, Inventory the media sets, setting up and running Catalog jobs, etc.

Hi SuperBrain, these are very useful links and have helped me a lot.

Just a quick one though: If, as I said, all I have is my storage device and a PC is there any way I can get at the data? I a DR emergency I would like to get vital systems up and running on a local PC to keep the business running and then go about rebuilding our servers. Is this possible or does the Backup Exec system need to be on a server?

Backup Exec doesn't really have to sit on a server machine/OS. You can install it on a desktop OS, create a backup-to-disk folder targeting the location where your .bkf files are, run inventory, catalog all required media's and perform restore of the required files (Note: I'm only talking about flat file restore here)

But, in case you need 'vital systems' up and running, you will need a similar pre-disaster environment created for the DR to work. (coz of obvious limitations, you cant rebuild a Win2008 on a desktop machine)

Unfortunately every step just leaves me with more questions.
I have installed it on a PC OK (odd that it would not do this yesterday!).

How do I connect to the server which has my offsite backup files. If I try it complains that none of the services are running. How do I get my data back from here?

This is where the documentation is seriously lacking.

Just to clarify the post above yours...you can install BE 2010 ONLY on Windows XP in terms of desktop OS's...Windows 7 and Windows 8/8.1 are not supported.
