Exchange 2003 File Restore Problems

Am experiencing problems restoring Exchange data and urgently need assistance if possible.

The situation is that our Domain Controller (Win 2003), which also hosted our Exchange Server (Exchange 2003 Enterprise), crashed and was not recoverable and we therefore also lost the domain..  We have had to build a new Windows 2003 server (which has a different name to the previous server) and create a new domain (which is the same domain name as used previously).  We have installed Exchange 2003 Enterprise onto this new Domain Controller, created new mailboxes for all users so that they can start to send and receive new email and all is working fine.

Our urgent need is to be able to restore the historic Exchange data which was being backed up onto an external NAS box, using Backup to Disk through Veritas 9.1 with the Exchange agent.  Every time we try to restore this data, and it makes no difference where we try to restore it to, we get the following error:

Job ended: 05 June 2010 at 21:04:01
Completed status: Failed
Final error: 0xa000848c - Unable to attach to one of the drives.

Final error category: Resource Errors

I have read a lot of articles on this error and despite it appearing to be a common issue, I have not yet found anyone who has come up with an answer.  Any help would be very appreciated.

  • Have you taken a legacy backup and trying to restore the single mailboxes or the complete database. In both the cases you have to do the redirect restore as you have changed the name of the server. Please try redirect restore
  • Hi voodoo,

Did BE sit on the same server as Exchange/DC? Have you cataloged your B2D again (assuming you lost your BE database)? Is the RAWS agent installed if the Exchange server is separate from your BE server?

    Laters!
  • In most of the cases I saw this error because of the following resons:

    1. The Exchange version the restore should be performed to is not the same, the backup was taken from.

    2. The Backup Exec account, running the Restore (mostly System Logon Account) has insufficient user rights. It has to be local Administrator on the Exchange server and also needs full Exchange administrator role in Exchange. besides it needs an active mailbox which is not hidden from the global address list.

be sure to check these things.

    best regards
