  • That is the SQL Agent services which is associated to the backup exec SQL server instance.

SQL Server runs using two services, you have the SQL Server service which run the actual database side of things, and the SQL Agent service, which runs things like SQL backups (from within SQL), SQL Mail, etc. Basically all the processes which do something to the database running under the SQL Service.

When you install Backup Exec on a machine with SQL Server on it, it creates a new copy of SQL Server, rather than simply putting a database within the existing server, and that runs as a named instance, as shown by the $.

So basically, I wouldn't have thought that the SQLAGENT$BACKUPEXEC service not being started would cause a problem, but it certainly wouldn't hurt to start it and see what happens.

    Hope that makes sense.
