Discontinuance of Netbackup????

Just reading the NBU Future Plans document found at https://sort.symantec.com/nbufutureplans and was interested to see the note next to the HP-UX (PA-RISC) entry which suggests that 7.6 will be the last major release for this platform (Pre-announce to drop in next major release) for all sub units of NBU, has anyone got any further info on this? I already moved my Netbackup estate off of HP-UX to RHEL due to the drop of support for Itanium but we still have several clients that are HP-UX both Itanium and PA-RISC, just looking to plan for the future.

Many thanks

Kev

  • I only see end of support for PA-RISC in the SCL, not for IA64.

My understanding is that Symantec will only support OS/Platform if the OS vendor will support the same.

  • The end of support statement for HP PA-RISC has been in the OS Compatibility Guide for quite some time.

I have only ever seen that Symantec dropped support for platform/OS combination when the OS vendor drops support for their own OS.

NBU has always supported NBU clients on one level lower version of software. This means that any 7.x version client should be supported by 8.x version servers.

    See Version Compatibility TN: http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH29677

  • Hi Marianne, manythanks for the response, I had not really noticed that sub note in the Compt guides, so what they are saying is that the PA-RISC architecture is an old architecture and they will not be pushing to support this with v8.x, there was a big thing about Symantec pulling support from the Itanium chipset a while ago, along with Oracle and other vendors, this is one of the main pushes we had to move our Master/Media servers onto RHEL as we are mainly an HP house.

I know it is a long way off and our 7.x clients on PA-RISC and Itanium will be supported by the 8.x Master/Media, just wondered if Symantec will now be reversing their decision on the Itanium chipset as this is the HP future roadmap.

  • Not sure where we got the info from about IA64, it was a while ago and the driver behind moving the estate off that platform onto RHEL instead, will just have to watch this space I suppose :-)

    Thanks again
