VMDK Backup

We are using vSphere 5.1 or vSphere 5.5.

NBU Master Server installed & Configured on Windows 2008 R2.

VMDataStore is mounted on NBU Master Server & also the necessary setting has been done.

Backup & Restore is happening without any error.

One concern, if i go to Disk Mgmt - and right click on VMDatastore, it gives me the option of Convert to Dynamic Disk, other option is greyed out.

 

How to disable Covert to Dynamic Disk option only for VMDataStore.

    That is normal and the way it is designed in windows.


    That option has its advantage if you want to convert a basic disk to dynamic disk and can't be disabled. If you don't want just ignore that, why you want to disable it.

    If you concerned about someone doing it by error you should give proper rights to server to make sure no one else does it

    VMDataStore is mounted on NBU Master Server...

    VM datastores should NOT be mounted on the backup host.

    Before zoning is done, these commands should be executed on the backup host:

    “diskpart” then  “automount disable” and “automount scrub”.

    DIsks should be visible, not mounted.

    Hi Marianne,

     

    Before Zoning we have excuted automount disable & automount scrub command from dispart.

    VMDataStore is visible in Backup Host.

    Only our concern is, when we do right click on VMDatastore it provide the option of Convert to Dynamic Disk.

    Anyone bymistake converts VMDataStore, than...!!!!!

    If we assume all that it will be very diffcult world, what if someone right click on drive and click format. A windows admin will never do it.

    Hi Sazz,

     

    It is difficult to say that windows admin will never do it, you never know human behaviour.

    Is their is any way to protect vmdatastore.

    What is the underlying storage and I assume SAN infrastructure? Perhaps you have the possibility of presenting the storage LUNs as read-only to the backup host.
