BESR 8.0.3.28325 Hangs at 5% when Creating Recovery Point

I'm setting up a new installation of Dell Poweredge 2900 Windows 2008 (x32 bit) Server, with Dual Quad-Core Xeon processors, 4GB memory, with a 1.7Tb Raid 5 Array and Dell TL2000 Tape Library. The only other applications I have on the system now are, Symantec Backup Exec 12, Symantec AntiVirus Corporate 10.x, Microsoft Defender, Diskeeper 2008 and Undelete 2009. 

 

When I try to create a Recovery Point on a network share (I've tried creating one on an Adaptec SnapServer NAS or even an attached workstation) it hangs at 5%. I've let it sit for 24 hours and it still will not go beyong the 5% mark.  I cannot cancel the operation and the only way to halt it,  is to reboot the server.  I can run backup jobs from Symantec Backup Exec 12.0 just fine to tape, or any of the previously mentioned shares but not with BESR.  I'm only attempting a 18gb snapshot and the drive is defragmented. Also I've tried the options of Disabling Smart Sector Copying and Ignoring Bad sectors without success.

 

I have not brought the server online "live" yet and can afford to experiment if anyone has any ideas.  I am willing to share any BESR logs or provide additional information  if that would be helpful

    I tried this as a folder on the user data ("D" drive) Volume on the same RAID  and also I tried this on a portable USB drive connected to the server with the same results

    Can you try another test for me?

    1. Disable the antivirus and Undelete.

    2. Take a backup to a local drive again.

    Did you found any solution? I have exactly the same problem.
    I installed Symantec Endpoint Protection and VM-Ware Server 1.0.6
    One of my servers backuped ready before I installed VM-Ware Server. Now it hangs on 1%
    Are there known restrictions?

    I'm having the same problem with BESR hanging at 5%.  I have it installed on a Dell Poweredge 1990, Windows 2008 (64bit) Server, Dual Quad-Core Xeon processors, 16GB of memory with 1.7Tb Raid 1, backing up to a Dell NAS.  There is no anti-virus software installed on the server as of yet and I've tried backing up to a local drive with the same results.  Any ideas as to what may be causing this?  Thanks...

    I have a similoar problem with BESR version 8.5.1.29666 running on Vista SP1

    I can take backup of files and folders, but not entire drives.

    I get an Event ID 12290 followed by 8224 and 24, all from source VSS.

    It seems VSS is having problems creating a restore point.

    can anyone help resolve this?

    I solved the problem on my server. but i do not know which task was the solution.

    i made this:
    - uninstalled vmware converter
    - disabled volume shadow copy (set service to manual)
    - removed all backup tasks and created new to empty destination folder

    now it is running perfectly. but i found no reason why it was stopped on 5%

    This did not solve my problem unfortunately.

    Still hangs at 5%

    What worked for me was to disable the volume shadow copy (vss) service.  Backups have been running fine ever since.

    Hi,

     

    I am testing verison 8.5.1 and I got the same problem.

     

    I found that the VSS service was in stopping state when the BESR was hanging on 5 %. 

     

    I killed the VSS service through taskmanager and the BESR job continued.

     

    The VSS service is always suppossed to be in manual mode since third party applications are the one triggering it, unless the os have something scheduled that uses vss.
