Server Restore Process

Hi Guys,

I have a possible server failure and may need to restore the entire machine from a backup. To be honest (and this is embarrassing) I have never actually tested a complete system restore using backup exec due to lack of resources (I know, not a valid excuse!!) so am therefore a bit nervous.

The OS was a Windows 2003 SBS running Backup Exec 11d. I have an email notification that the backup was successful Friday night, so i have a full tape backup of the system.

What would the restore process be? In my mind it would be either;

A) Load the IDR CD that Backup exec creates and follow the prompts....(I don't think I have an IDR CD though!)

B) Reinstall the Operating System and install Backup exec. This run a restore job in there somehow....

Can anyone shed some light on this topic....(needless to say i think DR testing after this will be given a little more high priority!)

  • A) If you have not created a IDR bootable ISO image using the IDR wizard, then you cannot do IDR restore. Otherwise, it is a matter of booting up from the IDR CD and following the process.  I have uploaded a video showing the IDR restore of a remote server.

    B) Do the manual restore as follows

    1) install the OS and leave the server in a workgroup.  Don't join it to your domain

    2) install BE

    3) catalog your most recent backup media

    4) restore the C: drive

    5) restore the system state.  After the reboot, your server should be at the state of the last backup.

    6) restore all your databases and files.

  • Hi,

I work with Peter and have tried this however after installing BE 11d and entering the SBS BE serial it wont let me install because a subcomponent requires the machine to be on a domain and I cant deselect the component...

Whats the risks if I put the machine on a domain?

  • Try downloading a copy of backup exec 11d (non SBS) and use that. just use it as a 60day trial..

  • For SBS manual DR process is bit different. As part of the installation, the computer will be joined to a domain, since Windows 2000/2003 Small Business Server only supports one domain controller installed into one domain.

Refer to following document which has detailed steps on manual DR of SBS 2003 server:
