SDR of Appliance

Greetings!!!

I am looking for an information before i proceed with implemantation. Is it possible to take a SDR backup of backup exec appliance. If yes then please share the valuable info. I have been looking out for information on support page but unfortunately could not find.

Waiting for your prompt response.

  • Jaydeep,

I did some research and opened a support case and according to Symantec SDR is not recommended for BE 3600 Appliance due to its configuration, complexity and data size – dedupe folder can accommodate about 5TBs of data.

  • This is a bit complicated process, as SDR recovery is only possible from disk based or tape based backups. You cannot perform SDR restore from backup sets from a deduplication folder. Typically assuming backups on an Appliance would be targeted to a Deduplication device. This has been mentioned in

    http://www.symantec.com/business/support/resources/sites/BUSINESS/content/live/DOCUMENTATION/5000/DOC5215/en_US/readme_en.html

So for this to work, you need to either perform local backups of an appliance to a normal Backup to disk folder or add stage in your main job (to dedup) and duplicate the backup to a Tape or Backup to disk folder.. Once this is done, then the restore is fairly straight forward

  • Hi Jaydeep,

    Thanks for the information.

My concern is the dedup folder, what if appliance crashes and i reset the appliance, will my earlier backup will still be there after inventory and catalog.

  • This should help

  • Hi Jaydeep,

Thank you again. But these articles are talking about backup exec servers installed on a physical hardware. I am looking for appliance which has Dedup folder on its own box.

  • No. The logic of backup and restore procedure remains the same even on appliance.
