Backup Exec Server service stopping automatically.

I am having issues with my Backup Exec and Remote Agent setup.

I have an Windows XP machine with Backup Exec 2010, which connects through a local area network to a Server 2003 (R2) machine which holds the physical removable media, and the Backup Exec Remote Agent package.

Up until recently, and for reasons I can't explain, the Backup Exec 2010 no longer connects to the Media Server on the Server 2003 machine anymore, claiming that the Backup Exec services have stopped. I check the services.msc on the Server 2003 machine, and indeed the Backup Exec Server service is stopped and the services that have this as a dependency (Backup Exec Agent Browser & Backup Exec Job Engine) are also stopped. When trying to start the Backup Exec Server service, I get the following message:

"The Backup Exec Server service on Local Computer started and then stopped. Some services stop automatically if they have no work to do, for example, the Performance Logs and Alerts service."

Is this by design? I've never noticed this occur before, and it's stopping the Windows XP Backup Exec 2010 client from connecting to the Media Server on the Server 2003 machine as the other services need to run off it.

I have tried a machine reboot, I have tried repairing the Remote Agent install on the Server 2003 machine, I have also reinstalled from fresh, but the problem persists.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Hello folks, very sorry for the incredibly late conclusion of this. Have been using a basic BAT copy as a temporary backup onto an ExtHDD. Think it's likely an actual tape drive fault, as it's started throwing up errors, and not loading Media Libraries correctly in Computer Management and so on recently, we're going to get that replaced. Thanks for taking a look into the issue and such, but I'm really starting to think it's a device fault over BackupExec.

    BE 2010 doesn't support XP as a media server. I'd suggest installing BE on your Server 2003 server instead, and load the Remote Console on your XP server.

    Hello CraigV and thanks for the reply.

    I think I failed to explain it correctly.

    The Media server is on the Server 2003 machine with the Remote Agent installation package (which allows it to be used as a Media Server and managed from elsewhere).

    Backup Exec 2010 is on the WinXP machine but only in a remote management capacity, and connects to the Server 2003 Media Server.

    This setup has been working fine previously but for some reason in the last week or so it's been having these problems.

    Have you removed the remote console and reinstalled it? Is BE fully patched?

    Thanks again for the reply, I appreciate it.

    I've reinstalled the Remote Agent on the Server 2003 machine, but not the Backup Exec 2010 remote console on the WinXP machine. I haven't reinstalled on the WinXP machine, as the issue seems to be with the services on the Server 2003 machine.

    I have also tried setting up a new user with backup/administrator privileges on the Server 2003 machine and  tried adding them manually to the Backup Exec services incase it was a permissions issue, but that's also had no apparent effect.

    Hello VJ, 

    There is only one error in the System log when I try to set the services running:

    Event ID: 7001

    "The Backup Exec Job Engine service depends on the Backup Exec Server service which failed to start because of the following error: The operation completed successfully."

    Check if any running processes in the Task Manager ...check & end the following processes -

    beserver.exe, ppvlsvr.exe, bengine.exe, benetns.exe, beremote.exe, beremote.exe AND lugetupdates.exe

    Once all processes are killed, restart the SQL instance & try starting the services in the following order:

         - Backup Exec Remote Agent for Windows Servers

    - Backup Exec Device and Media Service
    - Backup Exec Server
    - Backup Exec Job Engine
    - Backup Exec Agent Browser
     
    EDIT*** in case if they fail to start, check the app & sys logs again via the Event Viewer for any new events

    Hello there and thanks for all help so far.

    A bit of progress: after following the above post by VJware, I'm now getting an error in the Application log error whenever I try to start the Backup Exec Server service (all other services up to that point start okay):

     

    Event ID: 57806
    "The Backup Exec service 'Backup Exec Server' failed to start because it uses a Windows Server account that does not have the following necessary privileges: 
    Create a Token Object 
     
     Ensure that you are logged on with an account that has administrative privileges. Then, click Tools > Backup Exec Services > Services credentials. If you cannot access the Administration Console, on the Connect to Media Server screen, click Services > Services credentials.  Change the service account information so that it has administrative privileges, and then restart the Backup Exec service."
     
    And this immediately after:
     
    Event ID: 57802
    "The Backup Exec Server Service did not start.  An internal error (10) occurred in object 13. "
     
    The first message obviously and immediately made me think there was an permission/authentication issue, but I've checked the current account using to start these services and it has all the permissions they should need, and is a member of both the Backup Operators and Administrators groups. I have also tried using the plain old Administrator account to set these running with, to no effect.

    Using the registry editor, check the following path

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Symantec\Backup Exec For Windows\Backup Exec\13.0\Install\

    Check the value of the key Path

    This should be pointing to the install directory typically as X:\Program Files\Symantec\Backup Exec

    Hello there, thanks for the reply,

    The filepath in the regedit is correct and I have browsed to this location through windows explorer successfully.

    C:\Program Files\Symantec\Backup Exec\RAWS\
