One Mailbox is missing


Hello everybody

Windows Server 2003 R2 Enterprise
Backup Exec 2010 with all patches / hot fixes
Exchange 2003 SP2 --> Agent installed


The problem is, that one mailbox is missing, when I want to restore from a GRT backup to tape.
When I do a backup to disk, all mailboxes ar available to restore.

Has everbody an idea what the problem can be?

    yes, now I have updates from symantec.

    Following is the problem:

    Mailbox has dissimilar values for the attributes LegacyExchangeDN and mailNickName!
    But Symantec is now developing a Hot Fix for this problem! My workaround is a backup to disk. I subscribed this article and waiting for the Hotfix.

    Symantex says, that this Hot Fix has priority, cause a lot of customers open a case for this problem.

    When you run a backup to disk location all the files are backed up in the native foramt i.e .edb .log and the selection list is generated by reading this file , so there is not enought catalog infromation written to the catalogs as the selection list is automatically generated .
    But when the backup is ran to the Tape it first backs up the database file in the native format and then it wirtes the catalog information to the tape using MAPI and also refers to the AD ...
    There is an Arctile on how GRT works written By DEV T ,you can read this to get the better understanding ...
    Is the mailbox in Question hidden from GAL?

    No this mailbox is not hidden from GAL.

    Have you some ohter ideas why only this mailbox is not listeted in the catalog ?

    Try the following
    1. Go to tools -Options --Ms exchange
    2. Check the option to enable legacy mailbox support
    3. Go to new backup job and try expanding the exchange server , you would see the selection for the mailboxes
    4. Check the mailbox is visible there or not

    When an Exchange Information Store (IS) backup is performed with Backup Exec utilizing the Granular Restore Technology (GRT), and the backup job is written to tape, some Exchange Mailboxes may not appear in the (granular) restore selections.

    This may be caused by the difference between the Alias and the objects' LegacyExchangeDN attributes final cn= value.

    For example a user's alias was initially "TESTUSER" and later changed to "USERTEST".The object LegacyExchangeDN still shows CN=TESTUSER.

    Yes, with legacy mailbox support the mailbox is visible.

    I think ist can be the LegacyExchangeDN problem.


    In the Support Document, the workaround is, to backup to Disk.
    This was in 2008, is now a actual solution there?

    I dont thing there is any hotfix release for the same as the document would have the link for the same if the hotfix is release..
    Would suggested you to open a Support case so they can help you further .

    Sorry but i found out, that this user is not the only one which has another LegacyExchangeDN.

    Also 2 or 3 other user have this, but this user are shown in the GRT restore.


    some other ideas?
