Restoring from shortcut to Exchange\Outlook

I've notice that whae a user restores a mail item from EV the archived item is not removed. It seems to almost be a copy instead of restoring/deleting. Is this correct?

  • REstoring an item to a mailbox does not delete the item from the archive. This behavior is expected.

  • REstoring an item to a mailbox does not delete the item from the archive. This behavior is expected.

  • So, if I restore from a shortcut the full item will exist in both the mailbox and the archive?

  • The item in the archive is compressed and single instanced for space savings.

But yes a full copy will exist in the archive and in the mailbox when you restore from a shortcut or from the webapps. That behavior is as designed.

  • For some companies, the standard behavior is not desired.  For example, some law firms will restore all items in a folder from EV, then send the folder to a document management system.  They don't want two copies for legal reasons (they aren't as concerned about the space).

We've developed an Outlook add-in that adds a new restore/delete option which restores the items, then deletes it from the archive.  It also provides for restoring an entire folders (and sub-folders) worth of items in a background thread.

  • Yes, I work for a Law firm and that is exactly the issue at hand. When cases are closed the related email along with other documents are moved to Filesurf at this point they should be deleted from archive.
