"Configure Drive Name Rules"

Hi all,

I now need to consolidate few NBU master server across different building into 1 main master server. Currently my master server at 1st Floor will become primary master server with customised "drive name rules".

my another master server located 3rd floor will migrated become media server(attach with it original library). i understand, both database required merge and for sure my master server located 3rd floor required re-install with media server agent and attach to my future primary master server located 1st Floor.

I need to check if i able merge my DB into 1, can i still able restore my data for all host located 3rd Floor using the same library(Configure Drive Name Rules was totally change), as i worry the "media" unable recognisd library which have different identity(due to reconfiguration and now connected to media server where previously as act as master server).

Seeking your advice and very appreciate someone can advice me matter to take care in this kind of merging as i very worry about data restore, many thanks.

The procedures to merge, split, or convert servers are complex and may only be appropriate as a last resort. They require a detailed knowledge of NetBackup database interactions. Such procedures require the assistance of a Symantec consulting partner.

...unless you can import all your media from one to the other?

  • About merging of master servers:

    Problem

It is possible to move the NetBackup catalog from one master to another master server running on the same "primary" platform (i.e. from a Windows server to another Windows server or from a UNIX or Linux server to another UNIX or Linux server) using a simple catalog backup and recovery operation as described in TECH77447 and TECH77448.

However there are many other operations that customers may need to perform at some point that require including migrating the NetBackup catalog information from one primary platform to another (UNIX to Windows or vice versa), rename a Master Server or Media Server, cluster an existing Master Server, or merge multiple NetBackup domains that should not be attempted without the assistance of a Symantec certified NetBackup consultant, either a Symantec consultant or a certified consultant from a Symantec Consulting Partner.

A consultant will be able to merge EMM databases from both masters. All devices, media and backup images will be recognized.
One of the requirements for such a merge is that media-id's must be unique. Although they are in different robots, there is one volume database for entire environment.

Your Symantec Consulting partner will explain the process and requirements in detail.

  • Goodday  Marianne,

Thanks for your information. will you mind to let me know how data was store into tape, did any external info will also store(library information). As i know for NBU backup, before data start store into cassette, a header will first write into tape follow by data and end with data index.

My intension just to check did my library setting change after migration(totally different setting in new master server) will affect my restoration as i not sure what kind of information was store into media cassette and will affect my data retrieving.

    Many thanks.

  • Yes, there is a header on the tape, but catalog information is stored in Master server image database. Media and volume catalog is stored in EMM database on master server.

All of these databases need to be merged onto 1st floor master.

Please do not attempt this on your own. More than just customized "drive name rules" are needed for a merge.
Consulting partners have access to methodology and merge utilities to ensure successful merge.

  • The information as to which media server will atempt the restore is held in the NBU catalog, not on the tape.

This the NBU media header, at the start of the tape.

This is the NBU Backup header, written before each backup on the tape.

No mention of the media server ...  It has the backupid, the media id, the retention period.
