Implementing Netbackup backups for Sharepoint 2010 environment

let alone having to back one up, but just to give you some response before your post gets lost without reply!

Looking at the Admin Guide, the way I read it is that the use of all the above policies (A-1/A-2, B & C) would be to *fully protect* your Sharepoint environment - databases & server - with C solely being used to allow GRT of individual items. I can neither see nor envisage a situation where one policy would be dependent upon another as, in *general terms*, policies are separate entities & bear no relation to each other.

.... but, as I've said, I have no experience in Sharepoint & backups thereof so could be totally incorrect - although at least this post may now prompt others to respond!

well there have been many. Most of which I've resolved one step at a time. But I wanted to start with making sure I understand and was doing things correctly before getting into those.

As of yesterday I was getting a Status 13 whenever I tried to do a Full of Policy "A-1". I foundhttp://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=TECH140635 but it wasn't applicable. I was also getting a Status 129 when for Policy C (GRT backup). I was pretty much out of ideas, then I finally found http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=TECH157854. So I updated from 7.1 to 7.1.0.4 which seems to have fixed those problems.

So now, I'm working on testing item level backups using GRT (Policy C).

As you said, I assume that Policy C can be used stand alone if I only want the ability to restore individual items.

But I want full protection, I'm still not clear whether I need to add all of the Sharepoint servers in the Farm to Policy B.

'Policy B' looks like any "normal" server-type backup - altho' I don't know why they've stipulated both Shadow Copy Components and ALL_LOCAL_DRIVES as the latter includes  the former - so personally I'd be looking at any 'physical' server that needs the underlying OS etc backing up (exc. the d/b files which are covered by A & C).

So, as I see it

A - to backup the Sharepoint d/b info

B - to backup the server OS etc (i.e. everything but the d/b info)

C - for GRT ( I presume info here would also be covered in "A" but not granularly)

As I said earlier, I've no experience in this whatsoever & the above is just my interpretation of the manual. I could very easily be totally wrong & was rather hoping that someone else might've chipped in by now!

So, my backups seem to be running successfully. But I'm testing the restore of a document and it's failing with a status 2804.

Using http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=HOWTO51767 (which didn't have any specific info really about a solution), I'm running the restore from the client Front End server.

Attached are the bprd and bpbrm logs from the master server and the bpbrm log from the media server. And a picture of the Restore console, in case anyone sees something I did wrong.

Any help is appreciated.

Iam  the same confuse about why we didnt add the other servers in the farm.i configured every thing but when iam trying to do manual bakup as atest i get status error 2.when iam tryinf to enter to front end server from the explorer i get this pic.

If no clue can be found in the logs, try increasing the log verbosity on each SharePoint server:

1. Connect to the client server
2. Choose Start > Programs > VERITAS NetBackup > Backup, Archive, and Restore.
3. Choose File > NetBackup Client Properties.
4. Click the Troubleshooting tab.

Set the General debug level to 2
Set the Verbose debug level to 5
Set the Database debug level to 9

Then repeat the restore and check logs again.

E) Check all SharePoint server’s event viewer (application and system) for any errors.
F) Connect to the server where SharePoint Front-End server is running and launch the restore using Backup, Archive and Restore GUI.
G) Check the Symantec NetBackup™ for Microsoft SharePoint Server Administrator’s Guide and make sure the restore is being launched correctly.

Correct the problems that you find and retry the restore

That tech note is about the same as the other one that I posted. Neither of which indicate to me what to look for in the logs, or how to interpret them in order to fix the problem. For example, I can find the same error that I see in the GUI, but that doesn't really help.

I would not be surprised if I'm doing something wrong when I configure the restore, which is why I posted the screenshot in case anyone sees anything. I followed the manual, but there's a couple of things that weren't 100% clear to me. Like how the "Path" should be written, or whether anything should be checked or unchecked in the upper half of the window, or if the restore share can be on any server....

Did you verify forward/reverse lookup to/from NetBackup Master and Media and all servers in the SP farm?

Did you set up Distributed Application Restore Mapping per the Admin Guide?

Do we have BEDS in logs

If not get it created at earliest

Is SharePoint upgraded to SP1. If so Make sure NBU is at 7.1.0.3 least which has starting support for MOSS2010SP1

Yes, to lookup to and from servers.

I setup Distributed Application Restore Mapping as follows, but per the manual, that appears to pertain to restoring a Web Application to another Farm (not GRT item level restore to another file path). But I may very well have done the Distributed Application Restore Mapping wrong (please let me know), and/or misinterpreted the admin guide.

I still suspect that the problem is with how I'm configuring the file share and path in the Restore window, so if anyone has performed these in their environment, please compare. I simply chose a network share on the Master server to which to restore the file.
