MSDP Migration to other disk partition

Hi All,

I need an advice, here is my scenario;

Masterbackup server on solaris have a 10 TB MSDP and now its running out of space. Now storage admin just add another 30 TB disk partititon on the server. We still need to configure new disk as MSDP but only 1 MSDP can configure to single master/media server. How can we configure new disk as MSDP without sacrifice existing MSDP Data? FYI, there is no tape library configured.

    Just mirror the existing volume containing the MSDP to the new disk. After that you can expand the volume to use the full space of the new 30TB disk, and release the old 10TB disk. You'll need to use Operating System volume manager, or Veritas Volume Manager to perform the tasks. This can be done online so no downtime required.

    Thanks for reply.

    For the mirroring process, its suppose to be done on OS Level, right? Once the data mirorring process done, how about to configuring the MSDP with the new disk?

    If the volume is on LVM, you can use create and new PV with the additional storage and use pvmove to move data from the old pv to new pv.

    Hi,

     

    Yes its done from OS. With mirroring you do not need to do any confirguration. The mirror occurs underneath the file system at a volume layer. If your MSDP was configured on /MSDP it will still be located on the same mount point. No need to change anything at all except to perform an inventory of the diskpool from within NetBackup GUI so its aware of the extra space.

    Talk to the local UNIX admin. It will be no problem for them moving the data around.

    My suggestion for a offline operation would be:

    MSDP data is located in e.g /msdp

    • New 30TB volume to be mounted on /newmsdp
    • Stop Netbackup
    • do a cp -p -r /msdp/* /newmsdp
    • Switch around mount point so the 30TB volume in now mounted on /msdp and the 10TB volume  on /newmsdp.
    • Test if Netbackup can open and use the copied MSDP pool.

    Hi,

    what kinf of volumemanagemnt you are using for msdp ? zfs is not supportet but maybe you have an md-device or an ufs-formatted zvol.

    If not try Nicolais suggestion it will work always, but a donwtime is needed.

    Thanks all,

    Very appriciate for all  suggestion. I will do Nocalais suggestion :-D My concern is can we revert back to old config if the plan is not working? can we quarantee there is no data lose? Sorry, too much question :-)

    The copying of the data and the consisitency there of is the responsibility of the copy tool. You have a greater change of data loss using this method than with a mirror. A mirror is a block level copy and will ensure that the entire file system is copied without taking the MSDP offline. With a copy you'll be down for many many hours.

    As riaan mentioned, moving 10TB of data will take a hell lot of time and there is no garantee that it will be accurate. Mirroring will be more accurate which can be done without down time...But all the activities are related to System admin and storage admin.
