Netbackup 7.5 VMware policy restore error(2820)

How can I solve this issue?

I had my Master Server, Media Server and Backup/Restore Server combined, and all VM backups are working fine. However, all my VM restore attempts gets 2820.

Here's the logs from the "BAR" and "Job Details" respectively:

VMware policy restore error(2820)

Thanks a lot!

  • I've experienced similar issue that bpVMutil.exe crashes in process of creating VM. Check Application Log on VMware Recovery Host whether crash was reported.

And, try "Remove backing information for devices like DVD/CD-ROM drives, serial or parallel ports" option.

  • Enable bpfis and bpVMutil  debug log in [install path]\netbackup\logs.

These two logs usually provide more debug information.

  • Thanks for the quick response guys, but my VM restore still fails...

from the bpVMutil log, I'm getting a lot of these lines:

My vSphere Center is 10.251.3.23 and the original source ESX of the backup and proposed target ESX for the restore

    is pgc-hvesx-02.

  • Comparing with my test environment, these errors are not matter.
We need rest of bpVMutil log.

  • @ishikawa-san

tried removing the "backing information for devices like DVD/CD-ROM drives, serial or parallel ports" and my VM restore worked!!!

however, since you've removed something for this workaround, what would the effect of choosing this option be? any downsides or negative effects in any way?

    Thanks a lot!

  • The option "backing information for devices like DVD/CD-ROM drives, serial or parallel ports" indicates that NetBackup recover the VM as it was except state of removable drives, serial ports and parallel ports.
On recovered VM, DVD/CD-ROM become not mounted.
I think this is minor defect.
