We get this error intermittenly. We have 2 jobs scheduled each night - one completes successfully and one gets the time out error.
any suggestions as to why this happens.

What tape device do you have?
Are both jobs run on the same drive?
Does the same job fail every night?

Check for event IDs 9 or 11 that indicate hardware problems.
Check also for Hard Write errors in the drive properties.

Make sure you have not connected your tape drive to a RAID controller.
Try also updating the device drivers:
10.1: http://support.veritas.com/docs/284012
10.0: http://support.veritas.com/docs/279944
And update also SCSi drivers.

Did you notice if the job was failing for a particular drive only ?
Try directing both jobs to the same drive and see the difference.

Hi Jan,

Please update us on the same .

Unfortunately due to the size of the jobs, we can not do both on the 1 drive.
We have replaced the tapes for the job that keeps failing but still got a time out error.

Hello,

1) Incase the Tape Drive/Autoloader is installed on a RAID controller. Please move this off to it's own standard SCSI controller for proper functionality with the device.

2) Make sure RSM (Removable Storage) service is stopped in the services applet.
We presume you have installed the latest driver.

3) The general recommended SCSI IDs for tape drives are 2,3,4,5.
IDs 0 & 1 should be reserved for bootable devices such as hard disks.Change the SCSI ID 6 to any other available ID.(if its assigned). The SCSI target ID 6 is reserved for automatic configuration of SCSI devices.

Once verified, Uninstall and re-install the veritas driver using this technote.
