Agent service doensn't start - System Recovery 7 doesn't connect to the clien

Our Symantec Backup Exec Software on the win2003 server is having trouble keeping itself alive.
 
A few weeks back the System recovery console didn't connect to the agent no more. The progress bar would fill but no job data was loaded. Trying to restart the Backup exec process didn't work the system gave the error: this process is marked for deletion.
Weird, because the software wasn't uninstalled.
 
trying to implement the agent again didn't help much. There was no process Backup exec in our process list anymore, whereas for other servers  there is.
 
Reinstalling the software did help, the agent was back, the system recovery connected and loaded our backup jobs as planned. The backup ran overnight but only one disk of the 2 where backed up last night. There is no process Backup exec anymore, there is no system tray icon and no connection between the agent and system recovery (duh! no process)
 
after implementing the agent again, the system tray icon reappeared, but with the X mark in the middle.
 
Does anyone knows what this is?
 
I find no real errors in the logs, i assume the installation was a success, ...
