Install the VSS Rollup fix http://support.microsoft.com/kb/940349 on the problem server, reboot and try the backup again.

I don't know if you're problem has been solved. As I read you're comments You have 2 vss providers. One from Microsoft and another one. I had a similar problem that was solved by deleting the other provider. I copied the provider id and used that as a search string in regedit. Remember to backup the registry before deleting anything :)
