Backing up my exchange store takes a long time

Backing up the exchange store on my server is taking about 50% of the total time of my backup while being less than 10% of the total volume.  Is there anyway I could speed up this process?

I am using Backup Exec Version 10.0 Rev 5520 with Service Pack 3 and hot fix 36

Is this the stores  backup, or a Mailbox backup?  Brick Level backups are notoriously slow

It you do a flat-file backup of the Exchange Server, does it run slow also?

Is the Exchange backup running during nightly maintenance?
