Backup Exec 9.1, Windows 2003 and Dell RD1000

I have a Dell r700 server with a Dell 1RD1000 external USB drive connected.  Everything appears to function fine until the 4th day of backups.  On the 4th day, BExec appears to stop responding trying to communicate with the RD1000 unit.  When this starts happening, Windows Explorer becomes unresponsive and networked clients cannot connect to shares.

The only way to resolve this is to restart the server by holding down the power button for a hard reset of the server.

DOes anyone have any ideas as to what may be causing this?

Some specs of the server:
  • Dell 700r SBS2003 with no service packs.
  • Boot volume is partitioned to be 8GB and there is 2.95GB of free hdd space
  • Server has 3GB of RAM
  • The secondary server volume has 50GB of free space
  • Connected externally for backups is a Dell RD1000 USB drive unit.
