Backup directly from LUNs

Can I integrate vSphere and the SANs to use BE 2012 to backup directly from LUNS and not impact production servers.  I know about this conceptually, but have no experience with BE 2012 to that extent.

Hi,

BE has no way to access VMFS datastores directly. It can only backup the VMs completely, or on a file level.

However, if you have a SAN-attached tape library and media server, you can use SAN Transport Mode to backup the VMs which is going to increase the backup speed tremendously.

Thanks!

If BE can access the VMFS directly by zoning the LUNs to the BE server you can do a SAN based backup.  It affects san IO.

Craigv's description ks misleading...  You dont need FC tape

...thanks for being "politically correct" in pointing out the only oversight wink

jpawlicki: As I mentioned in my first post which was since repeated, SAN Transport Mode is a good way to backup your VM infrastructure. Having a SAN-attached tape libraryjust makes the whole solution FC end-to-end.

Thanks!
