Bar coding question

I work with Backupexec a fair amount but don't work with barcoding at all. A customer asked the following question and I figured it would be better to post it here.

"The Tape Library contains unique bar codes for each tape cartridge. Also, the Veritas software contains a unique identifier for each cartridge. If we place the bar code on the tape, how does that relate (if at all) to the unique identifier in Veritas? If it does not relate, then why do your customers use the bar codes? Or do they?"

Does the device support bar code rules ?
