Device Paused / offline

I am running BE 9.1 on a windows 2000 server with remote agents on 2 other servers.

I have 2 problems, the first is that the tape device in the device manager shows offline. If I follow the advice from KB articles and disable, then re-enable the device, this seems to resolve the problem - until I reboot the server that is, when it goes back to showing a status of offline!

The second problem occurs when I run any type of back-up job - the job stops after a few seconds and displays 'Device Paused' in the job monitor.

I have checked that there are no alerts which need reponses and have also followed all advice from both KB articles and forum suggestions, but nothing seems to resolve this problem.

The tape device is an HP Ultrium LTO230i and appears to be working correctly according to the device manager of windows 2000. I have also successfully managed to run a Windows 2000 back-up job using this tape drive.

I would be grateful for any suggestions anyone can give on this one as I have not managed to get a successful back-up for about a week.

Many thanks.

HI,

Please check whether the device is generating any errors in System Event Log e.g Event ID 7, 9 ,11 or 15.

There are no errors in the Event Log at all.

I did manage to get a successful back-up out of BE on 17th. (don't quite know how or why).

However, when I came in this morning the job monitor was saying Loading Media with an alert to insert overwritable media, so I inserted a different tape and now the status has gone to Queued and will not run.

This sounds related to the problem I am having and posted a reply to a thread someone else started here: http://forums.veritas.com/discussions/thread.jspa?threadID=52175&tstart=45

I would be INCREDIBLY thankful for any help anyone could provide.

I have spoken with Microsoft and they suggested it may be the following problem. I'm applying the fix, we'll see...

If you see these symptoms (sluggish performance, no internet, MMC not responsive )after a reboot, ask if they are running Powerchute. If they are, ask if it’s version 6.x and you can point them here to get it fixed: http://nam-en.apc.com/cgi-bin/nam_en.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_sid=1qAKEFMh&p_lva=6238&p_faqid=7202&p_created=1119891241&p_sp=cF9zcmNoPSZwX2dyaWRzb3J0PSZwX3Jvd19jbnQ9NDk1JnBfcGFnZT0x&p_li

What’s the problem? There’s a certificate for the java that drives PowerChute that expired on July 27th. The computer will continue to run with the expired certificate until it is rebooted, like after applying patch MS05-039. After that, APC is bonked, and nothing runs right on the system. Customers will believe they have been compromised.

Just wanted to say thanks for everyone's help on this one.

It did turn out to be the PowerChute software causing the problem. I applied the update and now everything is fine.
