Error 1065: The database specified does not exist

Hello,

My Problem is with BE 9.0 on an NT4.0 SP6.

We are in the midst of renaming our local administrator accounts and changing the passwords on our domain admin accounts for security reasons.

So this does not create as much havok in the future, I decided to manually create a local admin account and have the BE services run under this new account.

I used the Tools | Backup Exec Services... menu option to change the service credentials. I did this on two similar servers, one worked (kinda... a story for another thread/time :) )and the other reports the Error 1065 when trying to start the Backup Exec Device and Media service.

I searched the forums and found threads about MDAC Versions and two files in ProgramFiles\Veritas\Backup Exec\nt\data named bedb_dat.mdf and bedb_log.ldf. The thread I am following suggestions from is :

http://forums.veritas.com/discussions/thread.jspa?forumID=18&threadID=37910&messageID=4332762?

I downloaded and ran the MDAC Component checker, and the version on both servers was 2.7 SP1 Refresh. It did see a mismatch (on both servers), but it was on CLICONF.DLL & .EXE & .RLL and ODBCCP32.DLL and ODBCINT.DLL. These were not mentioned in the threads I found, and one server worked, so I discounted them as the problem.

I tried stopping the MSSQL$BCKUPEXEC, renaming the bedb files, starting MSSQL$BCKUPEXEC and then starting the Backup Exec Device and Media service. No change.

So, now desperate, I decided to download MDAC 2.8 and install. Using the MDAC Component Checker, I see I ended up with MDAC 2.8 SP1 on Windows XP SP2. The System requirements on the MS site does list Windows NT as an supported OS, so I hope that is a valid version of MDAC for NT?

Anyway, after a server reboot... no change.

I noted that the bedb mdf and ldf files never did get re-created, so I renamed them back, stopped/started the MSSQL$BCKUPEXEC (just in case) and still... no change.

So That's where I am today, after a long night. :) Any advice is appreciated. Thanks.

I also tried re-creating the database(s) via BEUTILITY.EXE as detailed in :

http://seer.support.veritas.com/docs/254014.htm

This also did not fix the problem

Hello,

In order to resolve the problem, follow the steps suggested in the technotes below:

Title:When trying to start Backup Exec, the following error may be encountered: "The Backup Exec Server system service is not responding. The service is not running or not installed."
http://support.veritas.com/docs/267326

Title: After an upgrade to MDAC 2.6, 2.6 SP1, or 2.7, the Backup Exec Device and Media Service fails to start with the error that the database specified does not exist.
http://support.veritas.com/docs/243497

Alternatively you can upgrade to version 9.1 which is a free upgrade from 9.1.
It addresses many issues and enhancements from an earlier versions and Build of Backup Exec v9.0. Refer the following technotes:

Title: VERITAS Backup Exec (tm) 9.1 for Windows Servers revision 4691.1 (Single .ZIP download)
http://seer.support.veritas.com/docs/264658.htm

Title: VERITAS Backup Exec (tm) 9.1 for Windows Servers General Information
http://seer.support.veritas.com/docs/262414.htm

Note: 1. BEWS 9.1 is a free downloadable upgrade inclusive of previously installed agents and options from Backup Exec 9.0 for Windows Servers agents and options.

2. Update all agents/options on all remote systems.

Hope this helps. In case of further doubts, revert with details.

Priya,

I read and tried the instructions in your first two links with no luck. I also checked the file protection on the two bedb files which look ok.

I decided to give up and go to version 9.1, which is probably a good idea anyway. However, the installation program does not calculate the amount of free space needed properly for an upgrade and I do not have 560+ MB Free unfortunately. So, I was going to un-install BE first, but it will not un-install!

In the bckupinst.log file shows :

I looked for the file C:\WINNT\Installer\{201E698C-B88E-41AE-8C46-3BBACADCD6E7}\BEInstParams.prm and it indeed does not exist. There is only one file there... setup.exe

I have searched the web for this error and it appears to be related to Microsoft Installer Package Software.

The suggestions I have found and done were to :
1) Verify the TEMP directory location is valid, and has proper permissions.
2) Verify the \Winnt and \Winnt\Installer directory has proper permissions.
3) Download the Windows Installer software (InstmsiW.exe) and re-install it.

None of the worked.

Any Suggestions?

Hello James,

On which drive is Backup Exec currently installed and what is the amount of free space there? Try to free up some space and then run the upgrade. Check the results.
If it gives problems, write back to the forum with details.
