How to make jobs time out

I am wondering how to make a job finish and mark as failed if it is running for an extended period of time. The problem is a job may get hung up and we never receive any failure in the logs or email, therefore we may not catch the fact that backups are not running. Hopefully this is easy. Thanks!

As suggested earlier configure automatic cancellation for jobs as per technote 255355.
