I have problem with using IDR in connection with BE2010R3.

a) media server w2088R3/be201r3 both actual patched, tried the automatic recovery inside IDR-Menu

-) startup with IDR-media

-) configure network, can ping idr....-server

-) can map media-server-drive to get the latest idr-file of the "crahsed" server

-) try to connect ot media-server to get the latest backup

-) unable to establish connection with the media-server (http://entsupport.symantec.com/umi/V-290-193).

b) could reproduce this error with a media-server running w2003/32 bit, running both the automatic/manual recovery

For the machine that you are trying to restore to, did you change its IP address to match the IP address of the server that you are trying to restore?  For example, if you backup SERVER1 whose IP address is 192.168.1.10, then you should change the IP address of the machine that you are trying to restore to to 192.168.1.10.

Make sure the media server itself has file and print sharing enabled and no software firewalls blocking access to file and print sharing. Note: Windows 2008 R2 does not enable file and print automatically

Some more information has come to light - it looks like the Default Lan Man Security behaviour might block the IDR request to connect.

As such on the media server check the registry for

HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa\LmCompatibilityLevel

and try setting it to 3.

Note1: if this key/value does not exist then create it

Note2: This functiionality might also be controllable by Group Policy (which some environments may need to check)

Microsoft Article on the reg key (for info)

I would be interested to know if this helps you as we might then consider putting out a TECH article covering the issue.
