Intermitent backup of the C:\ drive

Peter_Ridley

We have Compaq ProLiant ML370 G3 running Windows 200 SP4
A Sony SDX-500C Multi changer AIT 50 GB Drive
Backup Exec 9.1 4691
The tape drive is connected to it's own SCSI adaptor.
The backup is intermittently failing when it gets to the C:\ drive.
Re-starting the BE services does not resolve the problem, But a re-boot does, this may cure the problem from 1 day to 5 days or more.
The are no errors in the backup report the system event logs,
The backup just stops.
Any ideas?

As the job fails whenever it tries to backup the c:\, does it hangs ?

-- What is it's status for e.g.Pre-processuing, ready or running?

-- Does it produces any alerts?

-- Are you backing up remote servers also or it is only incase of local server?
-- Are you backing up any databases like Exchange or SQL?
-- Are you using Standalone tape drive or it Robotic library?
-- Antivirus service is running during the Backup?

Hello,

It seems that you are backing up the SQL databases as well as the entire C: drive of the remote server. As the job hangs only on the C:\ drive, try to create a separate backup of the C: drive only. You can also back it up on a backup to disk folder and then test if it fails. What messages do you get in the Windows event logs: application and system? You had mentioned earlier that there are no errors, but there might be any warnings...check for those.

Run the sgmon utility as per the following technote, then run the job on tape and if the problem persists, do paste the relevant part of the job in you next post:

http://support.veritas.com/docs/190979

Install the latest Veritas drivers in case you dont have them already and then run the job:

http://support.veritas.com/docs/273853

If the problem persists, do write back to the forum with details.
