Mailbox selection issue

recently tried to de select a mailbox from the list , as user has left. It only allows to change it to a backslash instead of clearing the check box .
 
Any ideas why ? - V 10.1 on 2003 server .

Is the Mailbox of that user is Disabled or the user account in Active Directory Disabled or locked?
