Netware 5.0 High CPU %

Octavio_Formoso

I have a Netware 5.0 SP6 server (Proliant ML370 PIII 700) with BE remote agent installed and running.
I have a Windows 2003 R2 with BEWS 10d.
The backup performance of any volume sucks... (2/7 MB per minute) and the proccesor utilization is up to 95%....
I have the las NIC drivers, the las TSA modules, the last of everything... whats wrong??

Thnaks in advance.

As this is a remote server backup the most important factor to consider is the network path between the two servers - you should check NIC & switch/hub port settings (duplex settings should be the same for all - eg. 100MB/Full). Have you ever been able to get more than 2/7MB/min for this server?

You should use TSATEST (http://support.novell.com/cgi-bin/search/searchtid.cgi?10092890.htm) to simulate a backup of the volumes on your NetWare server - if you get good throughput using this then you can rule out your SMS modules as a possible problem.

Do you have any anti-virus software running on your NetWare server? If so, try unloading this and then run another backup to see if this helps.

One final point - high utilization during backups is normal. This is not necessarily a problem..

Thanks for the data.
The server uses a antivirus but its down.
the server its a test server, so the CPU high utilization is a consecuence of the backup, im sure.
I will use the tsatest.. but i think is for local performance... not for network backup performance...
The windows server have a 1Gb NIC, the netware a 100Mb NIC... and the copy procedure between them have a normal procedure.

To clarify:

1. Yes, the high CPU utilization is due to the backup but this is normal and not necessarily a problem. Backups and restores are high intensive tasks and will cause a hit on performance which is why they are run out of business hours.

2. TSATEST is a 'local' test but at least this will eliminate the SMS layer as a possible cause of the slow throughput.

It might be useful if you could post the following file:

sys:\system\congfig.txt (type LOAD CONFIG to create an up-to-date copy)

Please ensure that you remove all serial numbers, ip addresses and passwords before posting.

Sorry, but you've posted the wrong file. I need to see:

sys:\system\config.txt (type LOAD CONFIG to create an up-to-date copy)

Do you have CONFIG.NLM in sys:\system?

If not, you will need to install:

Yes I have it, but when I execute the comand opens an utility and not create any file....
What information do you need?

Nothing specific, the config.txt file gives all server info - I just wanted to take a look at it to see if I could see any potential problems that could be causing the poor performance that you are seeing.

Have you run the TSATEST yet?

Octavio_Formo1

yep.
110/200MB/min.
The tsa components works fine.
I will put de remote agent in debug mode... any other suggestion???

Thanks.

110/200MB/min is not particulary fast for a local TSATEST but I suspect that this is a network related problem. Not much else I can suggest I'm afraid...

Problema solved, thanks for your help.
The NIC was working in AUTO mode.
I changed to helf duplex and everithing workf good (270Mb/min)

Thanks again.
