Hi,
Initially, we would like to state that the best practice is to use Migration utilities from Microsoft to move Mailboxes from Exchange 5.5 to Exchange 2003, since we cannot guarantee the restore of an Exchange 5.5 backup set to an Exchange 2003 Server.
However, you may try to redirect the mailbox restores to the Exchange 2003 server.
For this create a mailbox in Exchange 2003, activate the mailbox by sending some mails to it. Select the option of "Exchange Redirection" under Restore job properties. Provide the details accordingly and verify the results. The logon account used to connect to the Exchange server should have "Full Administrator" rights on the Exchange server at the "Organization" level and should be member of "Administrators" group.
Also ensure that Site (in Microsoft Exchange server 5.5) and Organization (in Microsoft Exchange 2000 server) names of the original and destination servers must match.
You can redirect the restore of individual mailboxes from storage group or database backups. However, you cannot redirect the restore of individual public folder.Public folders can only be restored to the original location where they were created.
