Slow Exchange Server 2003 Mailbox Backups

The performance backing up our Exchange Server 2003 mailboxes has dropped through the floor.

1. There have been no software changes (other than loading the latest MS Server 2003 security patches)

2. We know the tape library (a Dell PowerVault) is running properly.

3. The backup starts long before the Exchange Maintenance (and does finish before that starts).

4. We are not running Symantec antivirus so the KB article doesn't apply.

5. The drive defrags run on the weekend when no backups are running.

6. The Media Server happens to also be the Exchange Server so we are not running across the network and thus having network-related latency issues.

7. The backup runs slower if running an Append rather than an Overwrite. This problem has caused backups that were running about 9 hours to now run 12 to 14 hours. It is now taking 4 to 6 hours for 75 or so mailboxes and one public folder selection totaling less than 8 GB in all. The throughput is 14 MB to 16 MB per minute and is far too slow when the tape drive is capable of upwards of 600 MB per minute.

8. All other backups run at the expected rate.

9. None of the other items in document ID 284181 seem to pertain.

I'm at a loss trying to figure out the problem. Your soonest help would be appreciated.Message was edited by:
