Slow exchange mailbox backup

I have recently started backing up our exchange server using different jobs for the Information Store and the Mailboxes.

The Mailbox job runs extremely slow! Is there a configuration or setting that I am missing that will speed the job up?

Information store job lasts 1 hour 36 mins taking 105 Gb of data (1,085 Mb/min).

Mailbox job lasts over 24 Hrs taking 94 Gb of data (61 Mb/min).

Network connections cannot be the problem, or both jobs would run slow. I have looked at all areas of this that I can think of, but no luck so far.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

The speed is because of the Kludge that Veritas came up with to provide a function that Microsoft did not include in Exchange

The BackupExec Serviuce Account logs onto Exchange, attaches to the first selected mailbox then "opens" and "reads" every item in the mailbox using standard MAPI calls

See http://seer.support.veritas.com/docs/235354.htm for the Veritas take on what constitutes an acceptable throughput for brick level backups

Aso see http://mail.tekscan.com/nomailboxes.htm for a discussion of why you may decide that you don't need to do mailbox backups at all.

unfortunately the times tie in with what we used to get and we only had 9G.

You could always consider NOT backing up the Entire set of mailboxes.

the only times I have had to recover it has been a complete system, working from the information store.

So I am more selective over what Mailbox contents are backed up. Old users I have moved out into PSTs which is even easier!
