I have and old installastion with Veritas Backup Exec 9.
When I try to uninstall it, I get an error that tells med that valid media is missing.

Is there any solution to uninstall the program without having the original CD-media?

Thanks.

You might need to get the v9 install files, and point your uninstall message to those files. It's a minor hassle, but you should be able to get it from File Connect. You'll need a valid serial number.

You can also get to File Connect from the Licensing Portal. Login with your account, and click on "Get Software" on the header.  This is also a good place to retrieve license numbers if you've lost them.

I'd recommend downloading v9 from there, and using that in a directory as media to help uninstall. If that doesn't work, consider reinstalling this copy of 9 on top of your install, then uninstall it. (Think of it as a repair install)

If it completely refuses to uninstall - and this is causing other problems - you may need to resort to MSIZap. Now, be careful with this utility. It won't uninstall the program. All of the files and registry entries will remain, but the entry in the "Add/Remove Programs" list will be removed, and any program that senses if a program is installed will think it's not there.

I've never tried this, so I'll just throw it out there:  Would the Microsoft Installer Cleanup Utility do the trick?

My understanding is that the Microsoft Installer Cleanup Utility is really just a GUI front end to MSIZap.  It doesn't really ununstall anything, it just makes the machine (and any other install programs) think that a problem app has been uninstalled.

You're correct Mitch,
the files/registry installed by the MSI will not be removed by zapping the package however; it will remove any Windows Installer metadata related to the package (except for shared components; components also installed by other packages ex. through merge modules). After zapping the package you could manually remove resources related to the package without windows installer triggering a repair for missing resources.

Some packages (MSI) requires the original media to be accessable during uninstall, mosty not required.
If you know something about authoring MSI packages you could open the cached MSI and then remove the action triggering the requirement for the original source before uninstalling the product.

You can also download install code for v10d  and earlier from the product download page.  No serial needed for the download |8^)
