suggestion on index location almost full in enterprise vault 9.0 for MS Exchamge

Dear All,

have 3 tried servers

  1. Enterprise vault application with indexing (localy configured )
  2. SQL database
  3. EV Storage

2000 user mail box enable for archiving and 3000 mail boxes for journaling on enterprise vault. And also i have configured index location on local drive.

Total hard disk size is 1 Tb; Use space for indexing is 850 GB only 150 GB free space remaining.

  1. How to increase existing hard disk size? We cannot add new hard disk in the server,
  2. What suggestion should i provide to client for this issue

    Well if you can't extend the drives, and you can't move to a different storage on the network, theres not much you can do except for starting expiry.

    What is the legal requirement for EV? how long are you expected to keep data for ? forever? 7 years? etc
    If you have long sets of retention and large amounts of people being enabled, theres not much you can do except for scope out your environment.

    Typically if you have the architecture and the install done by symantec or a symantec partner, you should have had a design document discussing how much storage was required based on the amount of users, projected growth, how long you wanted to keep the data for etc.

    HI,

    As per tech article we had moved index location from one drive to another drive with help of BESR (backup exec system recovery) Last year. But again we have facing same issue. And we can’t add hard disk in exciting server because we already have.

    We can’t configure index location on network derive as per best practice

    So what you advise to the client? For this environment

    Retention Category is 7 years for data. and 2000 user mail box enable for archive.is this possibale to colse indexing in EV 9.0.if it is not . so what is solution?

    I guess it would be good to Upgrade your Ev server to EV 10 so that you can use the new 64 bit indexing , and also you can have grouping of index server.

    When we suggest customer to migrate on EV 10.0 most of the customer are hesitating as it require more manpower along with the cost overhead of Software and Hardware as EV 10 work completely on 64 bit

    ok so im going to be blunt, you keep asking what can you do, but you've already ruled out every possible solution, you cant grow the disks, you can't move the indexes, you can't upgrade and you can't expire.

    You literally have no choices left, there is no fix if the customer is not willing to invest in storage

    When you close an Index location in EV 9 it will continue to write to existing Indexes but no new Indexes will be created.

    Hopefully you have several Index location folders, default is to have 8, so what you can do is move some of these locations to a new drive leaving half in the original location and freeing up a bunch of space there.

    In EV 10 when you close an Index location it actually stops writing to it, similar to how Vault Store Partitions work.  That makes that aspect easier to manage.

    Now client to decide go with Microsoft exchange 2010 ,b’coz of in exchange have inbuilt archive solution.

    Well best of luck to them.  Lots of folks think Exchange 2010 archiving will work for them but they will be in for a surprise when it comes to storage needed for it.
