0xE0008516 AOFO Error

Every share we try and backup on server EOS gets the following error:

AOFO: Initialization failure on: "\\EOS\evaluations". Advanced Open File Option used: Microsoft Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS).
Snapshot provider error (0xE0008516): Resources specified for snapshot do not have any valid data on them. Check if files were deleted or renamed.
Check the Windows Event Viewer for details.

Checked event viewer, it shows VSS receiving start command, starting, receiving stop command, and stopping. No errors.

About EOS: Windows Server 2003, has SQL server 2000 installed.

Only help topics for this error seem to revolve around Small Bus Server and Exchange, NEITHER of which are running on this box.

Running Backup Exec 10, reinstalled latest Backup Agent to EOS and still nothing.

Hello,

It is advised that the AOFO not be used while backing up SQL database on which a SQL agent is running. its is recommended that the Agent be used for the backups of the SQL. So please deselect the AOF Option while performing a backup.

While the server is running SQL, we are *NOT* backing up the SQL database. Does this still apply?

If so, I should reinstall the agent without the AOFO?

OK, uninstalled Agent, rebooted, installed agent again, without the AOFO option. Tried another backup. Got exact same error -- AOFO initialization failure. Same error code.

Hello,

Have you selected SQL for backup? Also what are you backing up on this server. Separate the sql backups from the other data.

Create a new job and try the backup.

Again, we are *NOT* backing up the SQL server. Just files. Get the same error message every night on the backup.

OK I created a brand new job just to back up this particular server. And it works just fine. Not sure why the backup set we've been using forever isn't working.

Hello,

When you are backing up only files and not the SQL Database, then you can use AOFO for that particular job. But for jobs backing up SQL, AOFO is recommended not to be used.

For such scenarios, configure separate jobs for backing up normal files and separate ones for SQL backups.

In this scenario, the problem could have been with the selection list you had used for backups earlier. You might have had the SQL components included, which in turn have caused the error.

Please revert back to us incase of further queries related to this issue.

Three different people, the same wrong answer. Can none of you read the entire thread before posting?

Nevermind.

Hello,

We apologise for the error made repititively in this thread. However, your job is running fine after it was recreated as you have stated.

You wish to now know why; this is because the previous job when created included some file selections which have later been deleted from the server hard disk.

On the contrary the selection list had not been modified to reflect these changes. So the snapshot writer could not find the files while creating the snapshot for the AOFO and gave the foll error:

"Resources specified for snapshot do not have any valid data on them. Check if files were deleted or renamed."
