9.0 Compatible with 10.0?

We have a server running Veritas BackupExec 9.0 and various machines in the office running the 9.0 client. The trouble is, we have a Windows 2000 Server machine that can't be backed up with our version of BackupExec. Apparently we didn't buy the "Windows Server" version or something. Unfortunately, we can't find this for 9.0 anymore. If we bought the 10.0 client software for "Windows Server", would our 9.0 server be able to backup the Windows machine running the 10.0 client?

If this isn't possible, is there a place where we can still buy the 9.0 version that will backup "Windows 2000 Server" machines?

Thanks in advance.

v9.0 IS the server version. The Desktop version would be something like v4.6

If you are currently backing up the server that BackupExec is running on and various workstation machines (Win9x/W2KPro/WinXP) then what you need is a RemoteAgent for WindowsServers.

The v10 RAWS will not work with a v9.x server, but you can probably find v9.0 licenses on EBay or one of the other auction sites

The machine we want to back up is "Windows 2000 Server Edition" and the Backup Exec server is a Windows 2000 Professional machine. It will not recognize the "Windows 2000 Server Edition" machine, because, as we assume, it's "Server" and not "Professional."

Are we wrong in this? Is there some other problem we're missing here?

As long as you have BackupExec for Windows Servers on the media server, and as long as the RAWS is installed and running on the target machine, the media server can be W2KPro and the target can be W2KServer

Can you ping both ways by both name and IP?
is there a firewall between the two?

Backup Exec 9.0 is fully compatible with XP, W2K, W2K Pro, W2K Adv Server, etc. You should have no problems whatsoever with your current setup and software.

You say it will not recognize the "Windows 2000 Server Edition machine", what are you talking about? Where are you having the problem? Are you experiencing a problem during installation of BE, or is it when you try to create a job to that machine from the other Pro machine? Can Windows Explorer browse to that Server Edition machine from the Pro machine via Network browsing?

If it is a problem during install or job creation, as noted please make sure you have installed teh remote agent to the Server edition machine.

Hi

If we understand your question correctly, you have an additional Windows 2000 Server in your environment and you want to back it up from the Media Server where Backup Exec Version 9.0 is installed ?

In order to backup a remote Server you need to have Remote Agent installed and running on that Server.

9.0 server would not be able to backup the Windows machine running the 10.0 client.

Thnk you.

You understand correctly, though from the documents I've read in the past, Windows 2000 Server requires different licensing than Windows 200 Professional.

We installed the Remote Agent on the Windows 2000 Server machine, but have been unable to back it up for what we assumed was a licensing issue. When we go to make a new job, we go to the "Remote Selections" list and expand "Microsoft Windows Network" and our workgroup. From there, we can see all of the machines in the network, including our UNIX/Linux machines running the Remote Agent. All of the machines that can be selected here have white "check boxes" and all of the UNIX machines are gray, as they cannot be checked here. The UNIX machines, of course, can be selected in the "UNIX Agents" section.

The problem is, "Hydra" (Our Windows 2000 Server machine) is also gray, as if it were a UNIX machine. This makes it unselectable in the Microsoft Windows Network area, and it does not show up in the UNIX Agents area.

Did you add the RAWS serial on the media server?

If you do display serials does it show up?

I'm not sure exactly what you mean by "display serials" but if I go to the Media tab, right click on the machine, and click properties, it will show my BackupExec version and serial number.

Sorry, for v9 it's Tools\Serial Numbers

Click Next one or two times and it will show you all the serials that you have installed (or that it thinks you have)

Hi,

Backup exec version 9.0 server would not be able to backup the Windows machine running the 10.0 client.

We would like to know whether you have upgraded to version 9.1?

Thank you.
