9.0 Remote Agent Question

Paul_M
Not applicable
Two servers - Windows 2003; one is the dc / secondary data store the second is the primary data store. Both on the same IP / Subnet scheme and physically live next to each other, but the admins responsible for maintaining these servers are physically 100+ miles away.

Both have licensed copies of Back-up Exec 9.0. I want server #2 to back up information that lives on server #1 across the network. I believe that I then need the remote agent to make this happen.

Can I install the remote agent over an RDP / TS connection or must someone be on site? I ask this because we are aware of other software that we use that does not like to be installed or updated via an RDP / TS session.

Thank you in advance for any and all assistance.

The easiest way is to install the remote agent via the BEWS software itself. If you go to Tools, Serial Numbers and Installation, you can go through and select the remote server to install the agent on. With any luck this method will work. If not, you should be able to install the remote agent software via TS without any issues. I've never tried myself, since we use PC-Duo to admin remote servers, but I can't think of any reason it wouldn't work.

Hi

As a preliminary step, make sure that you have updated Backup Exec v9.0 to Backup Exec v9.1. It addresses many issues and enhancements from an earlier versions and Build of Backup Exec v9.0. Refer the following technotes:

Title: VERITAS Backup Exec (tm) 9.1 for Windows Servers revision 4691.1 (Single .ZIP download)
http://seer.support.veritas.com/docs/264658.htm

Title: VERITAS Backup Exec (tm) 9.1 for Windows Servers General Information
http://seer.support.veritas.com/docs/262414.htm

Note: 1. BEWS 9.1 is a free downloadable upgrade inclusive of previously installed agents and options from Backup Exec 9.0 for Windows Servers agents and options.
2. Update all agents/options on all remote systems after the upgrade.

Please install Backup Exec 9.1 Service pack 1 after upgrading to 9.1 from the following link:

http://seer.support.veritas.com/docs/267182.htm

Please install the latest drivers from the following link:

http://seer.support.veritas.com/docs/273853.htm

As both the servers will have Backup Exec 9.1 after the upgrade and by default remote agent is installed on Backup Exec, you will just need to have a remote agent license installed on the media server which needs to backup the remote server. This is also applicable to Backup Exec 9.0 but the version should be same on both the servers.

We hope this will help.
