Access Denied when selecting Exchange Mailboxes on SBS 2003 Server

I am trying to backup an Exchange server on a Windows 2003 Small Business Server. Backup Exec 10 is installed on this server and is licensed for SBS. When ever I try to connect to the Microsoft Exchange Mailboxes I get an Access Denied Message.

I have followed several documents on created a logon and applying permissions/privileges to the logon to no avail.

The user is called bexec and is unique. The user account is a member of the Administrators Group and the Domain Admins Group. Also the user has been delegated Full Administrator Rights in Exchange. Also the mailbox is working and can recieve e-mail.

Has anybody seen this before and been able to resolve this? Has anybody got any Ideas?

Hi Peter,

I was working on Exchange 2000 + W2k AS andI had some privileges problems. The problem is that in Exchange 2000 the Domain Administrator doesn't have rights to access an mailbox so you have to set some parameters in order to allow access. Here is a document that can help you:

http://www.petri.co.il/grant_full_mailbox_rights_on_exchange_2000_2003.htm

Let know if it works. Hope this helps

I have tried using that article and a couple of others like it.
In desperation I have tried using various articles in the Veritas support site and have tried setting the permissions in Exchange manually following varios aticles on the web.

Im afraid that either way I still get the same error message.

Hi,

- Please ensure that you have created a mailbox for the Backup Exec service account and that mailbox is not hidden from the Global address list.

- We suggest you to enable Restrict Anonymous Support on Backup Exec Server as well as the remote Exchange Server.

http://seer.support.veritas.com/docs/238618.htm

- Please refer these technotes:
When attempting to attach to Exchange 2000 mailboxes in VERITAS Backup Exec (tm), an error message: "The Backup Exec service account cannot attach to this Exchange server. Access denied." is displayed.
http://seer.support.veritas.com/docs/254461.htm

"Logon Account failed to access "\\SRVR\Microsoft Exchange Mailbox. Access is Denied" while selecting Exchange mailboxes.

If all the above steps do not help, create a new account and try selecting mailbox with this account:

1. Create a new user account using Active Directory Users and Computers. Make the account the member of Domain Admin group and local administrator group of Exchange server.

2. Create new Logon Account in Backup Exec using the same username and password.

Start Backup Exec -Select Tools > Wizards > Logon account wizard -Add new logon account, type in the credential for the new account. -Make this account a common logon account. -Complete the wizard.

3. Delegate this account Full Exchange Administrator rights on the exchange server using System Manager at the Exchange organization level.

4. Create a unique mailbox corresponding to the newly created account. Make sure that the mailbox is not hidden and is visible in the Global Address List.

5. Send some mails to the newly created account and access the emails to activate the mailbox.

6. Stop and restart all Backup Exec services.

I have tried the above but still get the message: Failed to access \\SRVR\Microsoft Exchange Mailboxes. Access is Denied when ever I try to connect to the Microsoft Exchange Mailboxes to make my selections.

Hello,

Please refer to the following document just for confirmation whether all the required rights are assigned to the Backup Exec Service Account.

http://support.veritas.com/docs/234575

Would suggest you to try as test to create a new account and then configure the necessary rights.

I have tried the advice in the above document and still get the "Access Denied" error when trying to connect to the Exchange Mailboxes.

Hello,

Have you tried with a new account?

And the mailbox which is created for the backup exec user should have a unique name, i.e., it should have the first 5 characters unique.
