I have a Seagate SC3401A TBU, I am using Travan 40 GB tapes....20 GB native and 40 GB compressed.  With the job created to use hardware or software compression and to overwrite media, I only get 20 GB backed up.  Any suggestions?

Hi,
 
There are a lot of variables that could interfere with the compression.  Please take a look at this article that explains this topic:
 
Backups fail to get double the amount of the native capacity recorded to a media, even when hardware compression is being utilized, or the total byte count in the job log is higher than the maximum possible compression rate of the tape media.
