BE 2010 R3 VMware Agent Full/Diff leaving delta disks

TechWisdom

Environment

BE 2010 R3 using VMware Agent to backup VM's residing on ESX 4.1 U1 cluster.

We have a major issue, where supposedly BE is leaving delta files randomly, where ESX doesn't see a snapshot present, but VM's are running on Delta Disks.

Seeing the following errors on Virtual Center when this happens.

Remove Snapshot - Status - Unable to access file <unspecified filename> since it is locked. when BE is done with the snapshots.

Manually running the Snapshots andconsolidating it again removes the old snapshots from VM, but is leaving delta disks behind.

VMware is saying is related to BE not handling the error correctly and telling VMware that the snapshot is deleted, when it actually isn't.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

I think the issue that yopu are facing is a Known Issue with BE 2010.

Please refer to this technote,

http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH142059 : AVVI GRT backup of a VM completes successfully but leaves the snapshot behind.

Workaround:

Choose from one of the following:
1) Disable GRT in the backups
or
2) After each backup use SSH and ESX command line tools to perform the following:
Restart the VmWare management service:
 service mgmt-vmware restart
then remove the snapshots
 vmware-cmd <machinename>.vmx removesnapshot
NOTE: with option 2 customers are strongly advised to confirm with VMware the specific syntax of the above commands and any if there are any effects on their ESX environment.
