BE SBS2003 v10 & remote agents - access denied

James_Dawson

Main server is SBS2000 SP4 with BE for SBS v10 with remote agent license.
Remote server is Win2000 SP3.
Both servers are in the same domain. If I type \\\c$, I get the admin share, so domain security is working fine.

If I try to browse to backup on the remote server, I get 'Access is denied' Logon Account Selection dialogue box - which everway I try it.

I'm running BE with a service account, and the remote agent as 'local system'. The BE service account is a local admin of the remote server.

I've tried re-installing the remote agent.

If I do properties of the remote server, it tells me the agent is installed and running, but the version is 'not available'.

I've tried selecting through 'user selections' - same error.

Followed all the suggestions I've seen in this forum so far - seem to be a few others with similar problems.

Hello,

Usually access denied error occurs due to the rights for BE account.
Please try creating an new account from network-logon accounts which has domain admin rights and then for test purpose make this account as default andthen verify if you can select the remote server.

Please update us the results.

Thanks for the reply

No it hasn't fixed my problem.
I created a new 'domain admin' equivalent account, but to no avail.
Puitting in the domain administrator credentials doesn't work either.

BE for SBS is v.10 rev 5520.
The SBS server did have BE for SBS v8.5 installed which I removed before installing this version. I believe that the old version couldn't back up remote servers. Possibly there's some registry remnant that's stopping it from working?

Hello,

The remote server that you are trying to backup is it a exchange, SQL server or just a data server?

Please verify whether the remote agent service running under LSA on remote server?

There are actually two remote servers, one has MSDE (cut down SQL) installed, the other doesn't have any SQL installed. I don't want to back up the MSDE data in any case.
Both servers give the same error when you try to back them up remotely.

I'm using a named service account for the backup exec services on the SBS server, but both the remote agents start using the local system account.

Thanks for your interest....

Hello,

You had mentioned earlier that you had tried to reinstall the remote agent and the remote agent version is seen as 'not available'.

Try a silent install of the remote agent again using the following technote:

Title: How to do a manual / silent install of the Backup Exec 9.x and 10.0 Remote Agent for Windows Servers (RAWS) if the push install does not succeed
http://support.veritas.com/docs/265736

Reboot the remote server once that is done. Later verify on the remote server if the remote agent service is started under local system account. Also check for the version of remote agent using the steps in the technote below. It should be the same as the one on the backup exec server:

How to check the installed version of the Backup Exec Remote Agent for Windows Servers
http://support.veritas.com/docs/239316

If the problem persists, revert with details on the exact steps done. Also check for errors in the event logs of Windows.

Hi,
I've done the silent install. It finished within about 10 seconds, but hasn't made any difference. The event logs merely had an information event to say the configuration had of the agent had been updated.

I've checked the version of BEREMOTE.EXE, and it's 10.0.5520.0 which is the same as my BE Media server.

Is there any diags I can run to give some clues?

Hello,

- Ensure that the user is a part of only domain admin group and no other groups.
- Ensure that all the steps in the following technote have been followed.
Title:
Troubleshooting basic "access denied" and "access is denied" messages in Backup Exec 9.x and 10.0 for Windows Servers
http://support.veritas.com/docs/266075

- Please try the following technote as well. This needs to be enabled on both the Media server as well as the remote server.

Troubleshooting basic "access denied" and "access is denied" messages in Backup Exec 9.x and 10.0 for Windows Servers

Do revret with the results.
