BE2012 2nd job appends to full tape of 1st job

For my weekly backups I have 2 jobs. I am using 4x400GB tapes for these jobs. The first job backs up approx. 520 GB, and goes on tape1 and tape 2. The seconds job (according to the job log) uses tape 1 and tape 3. Both jobs are set to append, if no append is available, overwrite. When i check the job logs for job 2, it never actually appears to use tape 1. the second job is only 80GB, so it would be nice if i could get it to append to tape 2.

I have read that artice but it does not seem to explain why I am having this issue

2 separate jobs

Job 1 goes to tape 1 and tape 2 and finishes

The next day job 2 goes to tape 1 and tape 3

There is no room left on tape 1, and job 2 only actually goes to tape 3

Why wouldn’t job 2 just append to tape 2?

1st job starts Saturday morning, 2nd job starts Sunday morning. There is no overlap.

This doesn't seem right.  Job 1 should have filled up tape 1 before it went to tape 2.  Therefore, I do not see how Job 2 could append to Tape 1.

When exactly does the first job ends and when exactly does the second job starts?
