Hi,
We have a virtual Windows 2008 64 bit Hyper-V server running Exchange 2007. The hyper-v host is a Windows Server 2008 R2 Server.
When we try to back this VM up (at the Hyper-V level) with GRT enabled, we get the following backup exception:
Backup- VRTSRV::\\ServerName\Hyper-V?Virtual?Machine\ServerName V-79-57344-38748 - Backup Exec was unable to prepare Microsoft Exchange resources for Granular Recovery Technology (GRT) operations. Therefore you will be unable to perform GRT-enabled restores of Microsoft Exchange data for '\\ServerName\Microsoft Information Store\First Storage Group' from this backup.
When we backup the Exchange data within the VM with GRT enabled, the backup completes successfully and GRT restores of Exchange data are possible.
Any ideas on how to stop this exception so we can use GRT from the Hyper-v level backup?
Thanks,
James

Hello James,
Please refer to the following technote which has information about this error
http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH154707 : Backup of a virtual machine using the Agent for VMware Virtual Infrastructure fails or completes with exception when the Virtual Machine has Mount Points

Hi,
Thanks for the link. The Exchange database files are stored on a basic, ntfs formatted disk (which is a fixed VHD file, connected via a virtual SCSI controller), so no mount points involved anywhere.
Thanks,
James

Hi James,
Is this your error:
http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=TECH196661
Unfortunately the other TN refers to VMware which would have no bearing on Hyper-V!
Thanks!

This article does describe the error but the VM we run has Exchange 2007 on it not Exchange 2003?

Hello James,
Have you checked and installed any recent live updates?

There is one hotfix available when I run live update but this does not address the issue described.

Are the disks on the wirtual Machine - GPT or MBR. Also, could you check if any LCR or CCR enabled on the Exchange.
