BE91 - Error reading file data while starting backup

Jimmy_Lung_2

We have a dedicated backup server running Backup Exec 9.1 with latest patches under W2003 platform. The daily full job backup all servers via GB LAN.

Occasionally right after starting the job, it fails with error "Error reading file data". The byte count is usually a few MBs.

I've tried to insert commands to stop the Trend ServerProtect before the job and start after the job. It reduces the occurrence but sometimes it still happen.

Any ideas what's going wrong?

We would suggest you to stop the AntiVirus services running on your computer.

For test purposes, just check if any other application is running parallel to Backup Exec at the scheduled time and if not then try to schedule a job and run it.Also check the CPU utilization under Task Manager.

The issue may arise if "automatic cancellation of job" is enabled. Please ensure if this option is enabled. You may refer to the following document to disable the feature:

How to enable the Automatic Cancellation feature in VERITAS Backup Exec (tm) 9.x for Windows Servers

Make sure that no antivirus software is running on the system at the time of the backup.

Download and apply the latest veritas drivers for the Tape device,

VERITAS Backup Exec (tm) 9.1 - Device Driver Installer (20050115) - Includes Tape Driver Release (20041231) and Robotic Library Release (45) (Intel Only)

3.Apply service pack 1 for backup Exec from following URL,

1) All servers run Trend ServerProtect AntiVirus software. For the backup server, I use pre and post commands so that ServerProtect is stopped during backup.

2) I've verified that the Automatic Cancellation feature is enabled.

3) BE91 Service Pack 1 has been applied since the first day of installation.

4) The backup server is attached to an external HP SDLT 160/320 tape drive using a dedicated SCSI adapter. I've applied the latest BE91 device driver a few months ago (Ver 268088). According to the readme, the device driver for this tape drive has not been updated. So I doubt this could help.

Uninstall the existing device drivers and reinstall the latest Veritas drivers. Run tapeinst.exe to install Veritas driver.
"TAPEINST.EXE" is located in the directory x:\Program Files\VERITAS\Backup Exec\NT (TAPEINST.EXE" is an automated installation application for installing tape device drivers )

Hello Jimmy,

If Automatic Cancellation is enabled, check the time set for the option. The job may fail if it limits the said time frame with the error "error reading file data"
