Backup Exec 10.0 Problem

Chris_Timm
Level 3
Hello,
I have a customer that is using Windows 2003 Small Business Server, and is backing it up with Backup Exec 10.0.

Anyway the customer has Backup Exec 10.0 installed (The one from Symantec). He has only 1 backup job setup doing a full backup of all the Exchange mailboxes etc. The same backup runs every day (M-F) and they put a different tape in each day.

For some reason every MONDAY backup fails. Tue-Fri is always ok. We have tried different tapes incase they were faulty and also set the tape for overwrite etc .. but to no avail.. I cannot figure out why the backup would fail on a MONDAY but be ok the rest of the time. It is backing up the same data everytime.

Any ideas on thsi would be a great help.

This is MONDAYS Log file in case it gives any further information.

You've list about 6 hours with of logs here, is that all of them, or were there more of the same before that? Does the backup not start until 04:30, or would it have been running for a while before it generated those alerts? Does the backup manage to backup any data at all, or does it immediately go straight to generating the alerts? If it does manage to backup some data, how much of the total data gets backed up, and what capacity are your tapes?

Keith,
Thanks for the reply. The backups start at 6:30 pm.. They have been set to cancel the backup if it takes longer than 12 hours.

The backup does start, it does about 1.5GB of a 10gb backup. The tapes are 14GB I think.. ..

As I mentioned though the backup ONLY fails on a MONDAY.. Tuesday-Friday is fine, they only have 1 backup job and does a full backup every day.

They said to me that when they come in on a TUESDAY morning (the Mondays tape is ejected).. They re-insert the tape and the backup then "continues" and sometimes appears to do a backup.

Well according to the login information you supplied, the job wasn't auto-cancelled until about 10:30am, so either it's set for 16 hours rather than 12, or the job starts later than you thought.

I'm suspicious about them reporting that the backup appearing to continue when they put the tape in on Tuesday. It almost sounds like for some reason the backup hasn't yet finished when they insert Tuesdays tape, and it's then continuing from where it had got to.

To help track it down, can you check and see if the 1.5GB of data which was successfully backed up was done so on Monday nights tape, or if it was written to Tuesdays tape when they inserted it in the morning? If you look through the job log, see which tapes are referred to, does it mention only the Monday tape, the Tuesday tape, or both?

Hi,

Is the job set to overwrite or append to the tapes?

Do the Tues-Fri jobs span to more than one tapes?

Is compression activated in the job properties?

In answer to your questions..

1) The Time Window is set to Start No earlier than 18:00 and end no later 20:59:59
2) Device and Media is set to Overwrite Media and Eject Tape when job completed is ticked

3)Under Priority and availability the option for Enable automatic cancellation is unchecked

The total size of the backup (i.e the data).. which I might add is the same on Tue-Fri as it is on Mondday, is 22,541,632,672 Byes (+- 22GB). The backup stops on a Monday at around the 15gb mark.

The tape sizes that are used are DDS125 24GB compressed 12GB uncompressed.

How do I tell what tape it was backed up onto. The media label is just numbers etc.

Drive and media information from media mount: 04/09/2006 18:00:33
Drive Name: HP 1
Media Label: 4MM000012
Media GUID: {bf8f18e3-ad99-4a2d-b8f3-504b099eaa37}
Overwrite Protected Until: 31/12/9999 00:00:00
Appendable Until: 31/12/9999 00:00:00
Targeted Media Set Name: Media Set 1

Keith_Langmead

If you look through the backup log you should see an entry near the top which has all of those details including the Media Label, which should be unique to each tape in your system. If you look through the log there may be another entry listed which repeats those details, but with a different media label and media GUID.

If you find a second entry in the log like that for a different tape then it would be an indication that the backup is getting so far and then when another tape is inserted it's continuing until complete.
