Backup Exec 10d question

KennethB
Level 3
 Hello,
I have Backup Exec set to backup 3 directories in the D drive on a server with a total of 5 directories on the D drive.  Whenever the job runs, Backup Exec builds *.bkf files in those three directories that I have chosen to backup.  After 3 or 4 days, the server runs out of space on D, and I have to delete all the bkf files to get the space back.  Each bkf file is about 1gb.  I don't know what these files are for, or why BackupExec is creating them while the backup job is running.  I tried to see if there is a way to turn the file creation off if it is not needed.

Post the job log for your backup job so that we can see what is happening.

A bkf file is an actuall backup? in the properties of the job what is set as the target media?

 hi,
The target device is set to All Devices.  I'm not sure if that is the same as Target Media.

I also see two of these policies that were installed by default after installing Backup Exec.  I wonder if they have something to do with it.  Here is a description of both:

A ready-to-use policy that you can customize for a Grandfather, Father, Son strategy for media rotation.

A ready-to-use policy that you can customize for a multi-stage backup strategy for backing up to disk and then copying to tape.

The second one may be the cause, but I don't want to start deleting stuff without being sure.  This server also runs Shadow Copy, so backing up to disk and copying to tape is not necessary.

Are you supposed to be backing up to tape? Click All Devices and see whats listed below it :)

In All Devices, shows the tape drive itself, plus the three folders that keep filling up with those BKF files.  Those three folders are the ones I have chosen in BackupExec to get backed up to tape too.

I only want to backup to tape too.

By pointing the job to All Devices, you are saying use what is available under All Devices.  Since the 3 folders appears under All Devices, they are treated as B2D folders and is thus used.  If you don't want to backup to disk, you should delete these 3 folders from All Devices.

To ensure that the job only writes to tape, in the Device and Media section of the job properties, use the Device drop-down box to set the backup device to your tape drive.

Hi Kenneth, Below All devices there should be an entry for your tape drive - if its not there you will need to run the devices wizard (eg if it was an HP tape drive it would be listed as HP1 for example)
