Backup Exec 10d

Hi,

I'm running Backup Exec 10d with latest SP and Driver download from Symantec on IBM x3650 server under Windows Server 2003 with around 500GB data for File Sharing. The backup device is an external IBM ULT3580-TD3 External Drive connected via Adaptec SCSI Card 29320ALP - Ultra320 SCSI. The server has more than enough power to spare.

I run a daily backup that backs up approx 500 gigs of data. A backup without verify takes around 25-30 hours each day. This seems to be extremely slow and I'm trying to determine how to increase backup speeds (e.g. updated all of the Drivers and Firmware). Settings are as follows:

Compression Enabled
Block Size 64K
Buffer Size 64K
Buffer Count 10
High Water Count 0

Read Single Block Mode, Read SCSI pass-through mode, are unchecked.
Write Single Block Mode, Write SCSI pass-through mode, are checked.

Any ideas on how to speed up the backup process?

Thank you very much for your advice

Thanks and Best Regards,
Alex Yuen

Restart The veritas services on your back up exec server Also restart the agents on the machines your backing up to. Recent service packs or updates applied to target or destination server? When was the last time you clean your tape drive, Also check to see, if windows did not replace the veritas driver for the tape drive. Also manual restart your tape drive, by turning it off for 20 seconds and turning it back on, in casue there is some thing worng with it's write buffer. You could try disabling the real-time scanning in your antivirus and run a test backup. Check your NIC settings they may need to be changed from AutoDetect to Full Duplex.

In addition to chicojr's suggestions, I'd recommend DE-selecting single block write, as this completely  bypasses buffering

Hi Alex,

Has this backup always run at this speed? If my calculations are right, it's running at about 200-300 MB/min. Definitely too slow for an Ultrium tape drive. From what you describe, you're not running a backup over your network, so messing with the NIC settings will not have any effect, but restarting the tape drive could help, as well as cleaning the drive. I would also reboot the server itself. In my experience this seems to do wonders for servers that start backing up at 10% of their normal speed all of a sudden.

If none of that works, then you're going to have to eliminate each variable until you find the culprit. I would begin by swapping out the SCSI cabling as well as the terminator (if you're using one, the Ultrium drives are self terminating if you only have one device attached to the SCSI controller). Next I would swap the SCSI controller card. If you're still having performance issues after this, start looking at the server itself. Try backing up using a different backup utility (such as the NT Backup utility native to Windows). You can also download and run the IBM Tape Diagnostic Tool to test the speed of the drive. I recommend using the GE version as it's easier to use than the SE.
