Backup Exec 9.1: Replace defective LTO-3 Tape with current new drive

CSonnen
Not applicable

Hello,

I had a working Backup Exec 9.1 SP5 Installation with an external HP LTO-3 Drive.

This drive went broken and i had to replace it with a new Tandberg LTO-3-HH tapedrive.

This tape is reconized by Windows and by Backup Exec as well. I installed the current Tandberg drivers, disabled the drive in Windows removable media management and ran tapeinst.exe to remove the HP driver and install the Tandberg.

On the next start of BE the wizard asked for the supported media types of the drive, which i set to LTO. Then the drive was available in the BE-drive pool. But it is impossible to use it with any LTO-media.

On the properties-page of the drive on the media-tab it just shows *** and no LTO, which to me means, BE thinks LTO is not supported by this drive. Any other property changes I do are not saved but discarded when I click OK.

So it seems to me, that this tapedrive is just to new for BE9. Is there any way to trick the correct parameters into BE by editing some INF-file or similar? There should be actually no difference in the commands needed for the old HP and the new Tandberg, or am I missing something?

Thanks for your help in advance!

Best regards, Christoph

Hi there,

Check the link below. This is the HCL for 9.1. If it isn't listed, it won't work. At a minimum you should be looking at upgrading to BE 11d, but 2010 R2 offers much more in terms of new software support (vSphere 4.1; Exchange 2010; Windows Server 2008 R2 etc)...

Here you can find some more people with Backup Exec 9.x and a LTO3 drive:

https://www-secure.symantec.com/connect/forums/backup-exec-91-and-lt03-drive

But if it is not on the HCL list, Symantec cannot support it.

BTW: BE9.x is pretty old, isn't it time to upgrade to something new ?
