Hi,

We have appx 7 TB of data in our File Server. I have gone through with the File Server Archiving option. I am using backup Exec 2010 R2.

Can anyone help to understand how the backup exec file server archiving option will be usefull and implemented?

What all things are required?

What are the points to be kept in mind ?

Regards,

Kamal

...don't use Archiving as a replacement for proper backups.

Archiving should be used to push older data no longer in use onto other storage, and continue using a normal backup routine in order to protect active data (as well as archived data).

Thanks!

Hi Kamal,

Check the document below...this will help you get to grips with the Archiving options in BE 2010.

https://scm.symantec.com/resources/Backup-Exec-2010-Archiving-Options.pdf

Furthermore, get hold of the Admin Guide on the link below...this should provide you with more information on how to set up and configure the archiving option:

http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=DOC4045

Just an aside...it's probably in your interest to upgrade to 2010 R3 as it fixed a number of issues over older versions of 2010!

THanks!

Backup exec file server archiving option archives the files from the file server (windows server only). You just need to install the license.

There are 2 options after archiving. Either you can delete the files immediately after archive OR archive after the backup of vault store.

For further information, please refer Pg. 1413 of Admin Guide:

Thanks for the suggestions.

I need to implement this for File Server only. My all the data is on SAN which we are backing up from SAN to tapes. But we face issues to take the incremental backup.

I am looking for solution to resolve the issue and remove the incremental backup. So when I gone through this option of archive which seems to be something i am looking for. This can help me to remove the incremenatal backuop and then I will only take the weekly fuill backup. rest of the data will be in Archive vault which user should be able to access.

Can this be done?

What all things I should keep in mind to resolve this and implement this?

Archiving policies are usually set up for moving old, infrequently accessed data from your primary storage to a secondary storage (vault store), thus saving space on your primary storage and reducing the data to be backed up from your storage to improve your backup window.

Incremental backups look for new and modified data from the last backup. As such, archiving will help in reducing the full backup size and window, but will not usually have an impact on the inremental.

Could you please give some more information on how you are interested in using archiving as a replacement for incremental backups? This will help us suggest some solutions.
